Construction Method for Porous Asphalt Pavements
Constructing porous asphalt pavements is straightforward. Any qualified asphalt pavement contractor can construct such pavements and virtually any asphalt plant can produce the material. No certification is required.
It is easy to install porous asphalt pavements. Any professional asphalt pavement contractor can create these pavements.
From the ground up, the construction begins. It should be noticed that the sub-grade should not be compacted throughout excavation and construction, since extreme compaction leads to less infiltration. One effective strategy is to apply backhoes and place the equipment next to the recharge bed.
Where, it is not possible, excavate with equipment having tracks or over-sized tires. It is important to stay away from narrow rubber tires. It is also necessary to defend the site area for the porous pavement from other heavy equipment operating on the sub-grade.
Arrange the filter fabric, once the bed is excavated to the final grade. Overlap the fabric of the filter at least 16 inches. It should stretch outside the bed for at least four inches. The surplus fabric is folded over the stone bed unless the porous asphalt layer is built to partially shield it from sediment.
Drainage pipe should be installed, if necessary.

The aggregate for the stone recharge bed should be arranged in such a manner that the filter fabric remains undamaged. Aggregate should be disposed at the edge of the bed and arranged in layers of 8 to 12 inches by applying track equipment. Compact each lift with a single pass of a light steel wheel roller.
The porous asphalt layer is placed in 2- to 4-inch-thick lifts using track pavers, following state or national guidelines for the construction of open-graded asphalt mixes.
The asphalt should be compacted with a ten-ton stationary roller containing two or four passes. Usually, it takes only a few passes. In various occasions, before starting compaction, it is essential to allow the mix to cool. There should be supplementary passes with a lighter roller to get rid of surface roller marks; it can be performed properly when the mix is cooled considerably . When the final rolling is finished, the traffic is limited for the first 24 hours because the pavement becomes more tender throughout this time.
