SANS 1024:2006 specified fabric mats are standard welded reinforcement mats and can be just designed according to the fabric type, sheet dimensions and bending shape codes (The reference is the nominal mass of the fabric in kg/m2 × 100).
The cold-rolled deformed wire applied in welded mesh fabric contains a characteristic strength (0.2% proof stress) a minimum of 485 MPa in respect of 450 MPa for high tensile rebar. Fabric may be utilized at greater stresses as compared to high tensile rebar that leads to a material saving of up to 8%.

Arrangement of Fabric
To get superior results while applying fabric reinforcement, make sure that the mesh is placed and retained at the exact depth once the concrete is poured. It can be performed with stools or plastic or concrete spacers. It can also be done by arranging the fabric on poured concrete that is leveled to the required reinforcement depth. Once the mesh is placed, the concrete is topped up to the defined overall slab thickness.
If possible, the fabric should be positioned 50 mm from the top of the slab and where bottom steel is necessary, it should also be supported 50 mm over the substrate.
Lapping of Fabric Mats
It is suggested that the formula should be 25 × diameter + 150 mm or 300 mm, or whichever is the greatest while computing the lap requirement for surface bed welded mesh fabric reinforcement.
